Community News: Meeting of BCA 6/27

What a great meeting of the Briarwood Community Association at the Briarwood Library this evening--neighborhood news and updates, report on the fair and time for us to present on the CSA. Good turnout. Everyone kind and asked good questions. Hope we can get new members from Briarwood as a result.
Rarely have I seen a community meeting where members and moderator had such positive give and take. No negativity. BCA President John D., THX! Thx Richard Z. for getting us on the agenda.
Oh, and there is an important petition going around about a new library.
Next meeting of the BCA in September. (They will be working on stuff, meanwhile, of course....)

DAY ONE: Thanks, Everybody

Thanks everyone for a wonderful first distribution. Wow! We were finally able to connect names on lists to members' faces. Thx for all feedback and positivity.

Pictured above is Giovane, Garden of Eve driver and more. He made the long trip from Riverhead, had several stops here in Queens, then found us in Briarwood. You may know him from the Garden of Eve stand at the Forest Hills greenmarket.
What we got: Veggies: Asparagus,  pea shoots, lettuce, onion, sweet salad turnips, chives, bok choi; Fruit: Strawberries, 2 qt, rhubarb; Eggs: One dozen from pastured hens; Bread: one loaf multigrain; Cheese: three varieties, from sheep milk and goat milk;

Norah and Radek did the sign ins and got everyone their goodies. I was happy to meet everyone and as always there is admin stuff.

Good to hear that members are doing outreach, getting the word out to family and friends. Neighbors stopped by to see what it was all about and we expect new signups. Our 17 member group will grow to....?

And oh yes, we met two of our canine members, Zooey and Ziggy, the super CSA dogs.

So, we were discussing how to make the pickup site findable and we talked flag, wind sock, sign, signs...and Rishi, who has energy and talented friends, brought forth this.
Look for this sign and you will find us.

Painted in solidarity by our friend Kaylyn from the Sunnyside CSA
Thank you, Kaylyn

Hi Members,
Good news! We are almost there. The very first pickup of the Briarwood CSA is this coming Sunday, June 16, 2019!

This is what you need to know:
What: Briarwood CSA
When: 10AM to Noon
Where: Side road off the Briarwood subway station, at the wall adjacent to the Queens library Briarwood branch. (see photo below)
In case of Rain: we will set up under the wood canopy of the apt. building on the corner, next block. We will have signage and someone to direct you by the bus stop.
In case of difficulty call: 718.971.3001

Kevin and Norah (pictured) will be there, as will Radek, special consultant.
When you arrive, see the person with the clipboard He/she will welcome you and sign you in.

Pls be sure to bring bags! The veggies are packed by the farm and will be in large white plastic bags with each member's name on them. While we preferred to have tables with all of the items out for us to select, this is best for now. We hope you understand.
The bags from the farm may have weak handles, so if you bring one or two canvas bags you will be assured the items will get home safely.

Meet your fellow CSA members. Stop and chat for a few.

Once you are home
Caring for your share is the secret to CSA success. It is not like getting home from market and putting things in the fridge. You need to wash, cut, store in vessels. If you do the work on Sunday, you can grab and go during the week.
Do you have the link to the Just Food Veggie Tip Sheets? Very helpful, with descriptions, storage info, and recipes.
Did you join the KGCSA Members Group? We invited you. This is a place for tips, recipes, photos, and your comments to fellow CSA members.

The first week may be light. The fruit is usually great right out of the gate.We are here for the season and  if we all work together, we will have a great experience.

Next pickup: 6/30 Same bat time, same bat location.

Blast from the Past

Here is a BLAST FROM THE PAST: the 2017 articl about the Kew Gardens CSA that was in DNA.Info by Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska that got us a lot of attention when we were starting out.
The article explains what a CSA is and how it works.

That was season one. We are now starting season three and happy to say we have a second site, in  BRIARWOOD!

Alas, DNA.Info is no more, it was a wonderful hyperlocal news site. We need press coverage to get the word out. If anyone can help....
